HTTP/2 and what it means for your webshop
This blog is not meant as something which, in any way, should be a complete description of HTTP/2 and the technical aspects. It should be seen as a short description of the background for HTTP/2 and some of the advantages. There are a lot of articles online which describes the subject in more detail.
The internet has evolved far beyond expectation and the capacity the HTTP protocol can handle.
A range of security vulnerabilities and speed issues can be related to the HTTP protocol.
For this reason the next version, HTTP/2, has been introduced.
HTTP was designed by Tim Berners-lee, who invented a simple protocol which could handle communication between web servers and clients. The first version was introduced in 1991 and subsequently updates have been launched multiple times. The next big version of the protocol was launched in 2015 in the form of HTTP/2.
The HTTP/2 protocol provides an efficient compression of HTTP header files and minimises the protocol, the server gets better response possiblities in relation to reducing the number of requests (HTTP/2 Server Push) og all this, including a range of other technical details, improves the performance significantly. This is really relevant to webshop administrators as quick response times in many cases is a neccessity and vital for the user’s experience of his webshop.
What is the result of http/2 ?
- Better performance (Read speed)
- Increased user satisfaction
- Higher performance on advanced websites will give new opportunities and types of webshops
- Better search engine optimisation
- Lower operation costs for servers and server licenses
- Quicker load times for users of mobile devices will accelerate this area
So there is no doubt that HTTP/2 will become a success and further upgrades of the protocol will provide new opportunities in the years ahead.
